Intent

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and manufacture products that solve real and relevant problems. Students will they develop a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable developing solutions to an array of realistic problems.
Our aim as a faculty is to develop students to be:

  • Resilient
  • Innovative
  • Creative
  • Environmentally Aware- Considering the wider world (Understanding Global Issues- Resources, wildlife, recycling, sustainability)

Developing a positive mind set for education through both practical and theory based learning, preparing students for future endeavours.
Within Design and Technology, we will continue to showcase the bigger picture and explain where a specific topic, skill, solution, material and decision can have global impact within the. Promoting creative, innovative, resilient learners for the future.

Implementation

At Westleigh, Design & Technology is delivered through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. Students work in a range of domestic and local contexts solving real life problems for everyday consumers designing and manufacturing functional working products for a specific client needs. Design and Technology is formed from a range of practical subjects combining Engineering, Manufacturing, Graphics products and Hospitality & Catering
Food and nutrition: As part of their work with food, pupils should be taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Instilling a love of cooking in pupils will also open a door to one of the great expressions of human creativity. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.

Impact

At Westleigh, the Design and technology faculty aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical skills needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users using a range of materials, equipment and fabrication processes

Students should also develop a clear understanding of the importance of evaluating and testing their ideas and products, and on the Food course, understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
